MALAYSIAN TAKES RUSSIAN ROCKET RIDE TO PLAY CHILDREN'S GAMES IN SPACE
Topic: - The Experiments

Malaysia's first astronaut will go to the International Space Station on a Russian spacecraft to play traditional Malay children's games without gravity, the Associated Press reported on Wednesday.

The astronaut yet to be selected will play "batu seremban", or "five stones" and spin traditional Malay tops in space, Agriculture Ministry parliamentary secretary Rohani Abdul Karim told lawmakers in parliament, according to national news agency Bernama.

"Batu seremban" involves throwing and catching stones, and is usually played by young girls.

"The main purpose of launching an astronaut in space is to conduct experiments in microgravity,” Rohani said. "These conditions are not available on earth ... and this is an opportunity for our scientists to prove their mettle."

Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, 34, and Faiz Khaleed, 26, are vying to join a Russian space expedition for eight days in September next year.

Sheikh Muszaphar is considered the "priority" candidate while Faiz is the reserve option, the government has said. They were selected from more than 10,000 candidates.

Both are currently in Moscow undergoing training

MALAYSIAN ASTRONAUTS TO SPIN TOP, TOSS BATU SEREMBAN IN SPACE
Topic: - The Experiments

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian pioneer astronaut will spin top and toss "batu seremban' (five-stone game) as part of an experiment during his space travel.

"The astronaut will also paint a batik motif and make 'teh tarik' ('pulled' tea) which would be shared with his fellow astronauts," said Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry parliamentary secretary Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim.

Rohani, who was representing the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Dr Marcus Mojigoh (BN-Putatan) in the Dewan Rakyat, here Wednesday.

('Batu seremban' is played by throwing one stone and sweeping another on the floor and then simultaneously catching the one thrown earlier.)

On Marcus's original question, Rohani said a lot of scientists had forwarded their research proposal in space to the astronaut.

"The main objective of sending an astronaut into orbit is to carry out scientific experiments under microgravity - a situation alien to the earth. As such the National Aerospace Agency has opened doors to our scientists to show their mettle and capabilities through the National Astronaut Programme," said Rohani.

She said the outcome of the experiments would be studied on earth with the hope that it would unravel the mysteries in science, education and medicine.

"The National Astronaut Programme is not only aimed at despatching an astronaut into space but it will be a continuous affair as it will benefit the people."

She said the programme was not borne by the Treasury, but derived by offsetting the purchase of Sukhoi jet fighters from Russia by the Defence Ministry.

Two Malaysian astronaut candidates Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor and Kapt Dr Faiz Khaleed are now undergoing rigorous 12-month training at Star City, Moscow where eventually one of them will be selected as the pioneer Malaysian astronaut who will lift off from the International Space Station

MALAYSIAN NATIONAL SPACE CENTER OPENS
Topic: - The Prog. - General

Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi opened Malaysia's National Space Center at Banting, some 150 km southwest of Kuala Lumpur, in a bid to harness space technology for the country's development.

The prime minister said that, to compete with developed countries, Malaysia needed to master various science and technology fields including space technology.

He said that the Malaysian government was committed to enhance space science research capabilities and innovations, stressing that the country would not be able to become a developed country without building the capacity in that field.

Malaysia has set a target to become a developed country by 2020. Badawi said that the center was an additional step to propel the country towards a developed nation based on knowledge and technology.

Malaysia's national news services Bernama said that the space center is equipped with sophisticated laboratories to assist in work relating to satellite systems.

The center, which began to be developed in 2004, has the capacity to monitor and communicate with astronauts at the International Space Station, Bernama said.

Badawi said that Malaysia has gained a lot from space technologies since the 1970s, including communication satellite technology which facilitated contact with the outside world and enabled the country to receive worldwide news.

Communication satellites are also used in the security and defence sectors, he said.

Malaysia had used satellite pictures over the past several decades for various purposes, including to forecast weather, monitor land development and the latest to detect and monitor natural disasters and forest fires, he added.

In addition, he said, Malaysia was building the National Observatory in Langkawi, another crucial infrastructure in the country for space science research.

The observatory would reportedly be equipped with a robotic telescope, which will enable people to view space through the internet.

Badawi said that Malaysia should be committed not only to become a user of space science and technology but also more importantly to be a contributor towards its development in the future.

MALAYSIAN ASTRONAUT PROVES ISLAM NO HINDRANCE TO PROGRESS
Topic: - Other Reports

BANTING: The space experience of Malaysia's first astronaut of Islamic faith will prove to the world that Islam is not a hindrance to progress.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the needs of the national astronaut who would travel to the International Space Station had been looked into considering he is a Muslim.

He said guidelines for the astronaut to carry out his routine and prayers in the space station had been issued during a seminar held early this year.

"We want our astronaut to show to the world that Islam is not a hindrance to progress even while exploring space," he said when opening the National Space Centre in Sungai Lang, here Wednesday.

Two trainee astronauts, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor and Kapten Dr Faiz Khaleed, are in Russia to undergo one-year training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre before one of them is selected for the journey into space.

At the ceremony, Abdullah also held a video conference with the two astronauts for about five minutes.

Apart from asking about their health, Abdullah also asked about their training and informed them that Malaysians were placing their hopes on the two astronauts to do the country proud.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar and Dr Faiz were happy to receive the video call from the Prime Minister. They told him that they were learning Russian and getting acclimatised with the training centre's surroundings.

"We are treated very well," said Dr Sheikh Muszaphar when asked by Abdullah about the centre's service.

Dr Faiz said both were getting a lot of invitations to break fast from Malaysians staying in Russia.

"At least you got to meet Malaysians. Once in space, there will be no more chance to see Malaysians," Abdullah said in jest.

Abdullah advised the two astronauts to learn as much as they could from the programme and to take care of their health

RUSSIA, MALAYSIA INK SPACE DEAL AS TOURIST FLIGHT PRICES RISE
Topic: - The Prog. - General

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Al Masrie (left) and Faiz bin Khaleed. - AFP
MOSCOW:  Russia has signed a contract to send a Malaysian astronaut into space in 2007, but future space tourists face a price increase, a Russian space agency official said Friday. Russia will send the Malaysian astronaut, thought to be a 34-year-old doctor, on board a Soyuz rocket to the International Space Station as part of a $900-million contract signed in 2003 to supply the Asian country with 18 Russian multipurpose Su-30MKM air superiority fighters.

The agency said the contract will allow it to start training two Malaysian astronauts, one of whom will be sent to the International Space Station next year - Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Al Masrie and Faiz bin Khaleed, his backup.

The astronaut and his backup were originally scheduled to arrive in Russia for training in late September.

Alexei Krasnov, head of the Russian space agency's manned programs, said earlier Friday that Russia and NASA would soon reach an agreement on sending U.S. astronauts to the ISS in the future.

"We all live in the real world, and the space industry is also not in a vacuum, and we fully depend on global prices," Krasnov said, adding that prices for spacecraft components have grown dramatically in the last two years.

The official said the price for commercial space flights will go up as well, reaching $21.8 million. Four space tourists have paid about $20 million for the pleasure of spending a week on the orbital station, but the Russian official said the down-to-earth problem of inflation was driving up prices.

"The price for space tourist flights will also increase," Krasnov said, adding that each tourist flight deal is discussed individually and is considered a commercial secret.

The latest space tourist, Anousheh Ansari, 40, an Iranian-born American businesswoman, returned to Earth early Friday after paying around $20 million for about eight days in space.

KUALA LUMPUR: Tonight, Malaysia's top two astronaut candidates will be bringing along the hope of Malaysians as they leave for Russia for a one-year training stint.

Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Kong Cho Ha said he would personally be at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport to send off Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor and Kapten Dr Faiz Khaleed, who were due to leave at 9.30pm.

"They will be going to Russia for almost a year for training before one of them becomes our first Malaysian astronaut," he told reporters after launching the Student Aid 2006 programme at a school here, Tuesday.

The duo, who had been selected under Malaysia's first astronaut programme, will undergo the training before departing for the International Space Station (ISS).

Kong also placed high hopes on the country's first astronaut who will be working as a team with astronauts from Russia and other countries.

On the prospect of serving "teh tarik" and "roti canai" in space, Kong explained that the idea came about just to explore the possibilities but for the time being, they had not decided to do so.

"Of course it depends on the food and the type of nutritional products they will consume. I think it will be determined by the nutritionist.

"Also how it is going to be packaged and all that have to be very scientific and technology-based ...so for the time being, no teh tarik," he added.

On the student aid, Kong who was representing Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said the Da Ma Cai's Student Aid 2006 programme would see more than 10,400 needy pupils from 350 primary schools in the peninsula receiving RM100 each.

The contribution would go towards helping the students purchase school items such as books, uniforms and shoes for the coming academic year, he added.

Pan Malaysian Pools Sdn Bhd chief operating officer Yin Yee Yuen disclosed that 15 schools in the country in need of funding for upgrading purposes, would receive RM5,000 each under the school aid programme.

"This year's corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative by Da Ma Chai will see a total contribution of RM1.1 million towards education," Yin added

ASPIRING ASTRONAUTS SACRIFICE LOVE FOR SPACE AMBITIONS
Topic: - Abt the Final 2

Two finalists competing to become Malaysia's first astronaut have signed a contract that bars them from marrying before 2008, news reports said on Saturday. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, 34, and Faiz Khaleed, 26, who are vying with each other to join a Russian space expedition in September next year, have both agreed to concentrate on preparing for the mission, the national news agency Bernama and The Star newspaper reported. "I am ready to give my full commitment, my heart and soul to be the first Malaysian in space," said Sheikh Muszaphar, a hospital medical officer who added that his girlfriend is willing to wait for him to fulfill his dream. "It is a sacrifice that we both have to make, and I thank her for being so understanding," Sheikh Muszaphar was quoted as telling Malaysian reporters during a luncheon to fete the two men, who are scheduled to leave for Russia next week for nearly a year of preparations. Dental forces dentist Faiz declined to say whether he has a sweetheart, but stressed that he had "no problems" with the contract. "I pretty much understand the importance of staying single for the time being," he said.

NO SPACE FOR LOVE DURING TRAINING
Topic: - Abt the Final 2

By MAZWIN NIK ANIS

PUTRAJAYA: Marriage is not an option until 2008 for the final two candidates in the running to be Malaysia's first man in space, but Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor and Kapten Dr Faiz Khaleed are not allowing this to dampen their hopes of carrying the Jalur Gemilang into space next year.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar, 34, an orthopaedic surgeon with Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, admitted to having "someone special" who understood the clause.

"She is very understanding and we both know how important this programme is to me."

"I am ready to give my full commitment, my heart and soul, to be the first Malaysian in space. It is a sacrifice that we both have to make and I thank her for being understanding," he said.

LUNCH DATE: Kapten Dr Faiz (right) greeting Datuk Seri Najib while Dr Sheikh Muszaphar and Datin Seri Rosmah look on during their meeting.
Kapten Dr Faiz, 26, a dentist with the Armed Forces, however, declined to say if he already had that "special someone".

"I have no problems signing a contract that stipulates I cannot get married over the next two years."

"I know how important it is to give full concentration to the programme and I know that I need to remain focused. I pretty much understand the importance of staying single for the time being," he said.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis said recently that the two candidates had signed a contract that stipulated they could not get married until 2008 to ensure full concentration during the training programme.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar and Kapt Dr Faiz will leave for Russia on Tuesday to continue with their training programme, which includes Russian language classes.

As for mementos, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar is taking along photographs of his family and loved ones while Kapt Dr Faiz has CDs of songs he and his family love to sing along to. He said his favourite song is Ronan Keating's When You Say Nothing At All.

"It will be interesting to experience Ramadan in Russia. The weather is not warm and we have been told there will not be much physical activity in the early stages, but we still have our normal daily workouts," said Kapt Dr Faiz.

Deputy Prime Minister's wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor hosted lunch for the two astronauts yesterday. Also present were Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Dr Jamaluddin and National Space Agency director-general Prof Datuk Dr Mazlan Othman.

Speaking briefly to reporters, Najib said the Government and Malaysians were proud of the courage and dedication showed by the two candidates, and that their upcoming trip to Russia would take them to a more challenging phase of their training.

"On behalf of the Government, I bid them farewell, good luck and all the best. We are all proud of them," he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Jamaluddin said the Cabinet had authorised his ministry to arrange with Russian space authorities for research to be conducted when the Malaysian astronaut was in space next year.

"The Cabinet has given my ministry the authority to proceed with the arrangements to sign an agreement with Russia to conduct experiments and research in space."

"This is a new development and we will announce the areas of research once the agreement has been finalised," he said.

ANGKASAWAN PERTAMA NEGARA DIUMUM ESOK
Topic: - Selection Process

MALAYSIAN ASTRONAUTS SAY NO MARRIAGE TILL AFTER MISSION
Topic: - Abt the Final 2

Malaysian astronauts Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor (left) and Faiz Khaleed. - PHOTO courtesy of AFP.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's first astronaut and his back-up have said neither will marry a partner until after the country's first space mission has been completed in 2008, state media said Friday. Astronaut Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, a 34-year-old doctor and his back-up, army dentist Faiz Khaleed, 26, said that shunning nuptials would help keep their minds on the mission.

"At least we can focus on our mission because what we are doing now is for the country," Sheikh Muszaphar was quoted as saying by the state Bernama news agency.

Sheikh Muszaphar, whose good looks have also landed him modelling jobs, said he had a sweetheart but she understood the demands of the mission.

Science and Technology Minister Jamaluddin Jarjis said during the week both men had signed contracts which forbade them to tie the knot until 2008, well after the blast-off date in September next year.

"It is to ensure that we focus on the programme. It is quite good that it is one of the clauses in the contract," said Faiz, who declined to reveal if he had plans to get married in the near future.

Sheikh Muszaphar earlier this month was announced as the winner of a nationwide hunt to be Malaysia's first astronaut, a contest which drew tens of thousands of hopefuls.

He will blast off on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft and visit the International Space Station in September 2007.

The project was conceived in 2003 when Russia agreed to send a Malaysian to the space station as part of a billion-dollar purchase of 18 Sukhoi 30-MKM fighter jets.

ANGKASAWAN NEGARA MUNGKIN KE ANGKASA LEPAS 31 OGOS 2007
Topic: - The Prog. - General

Dua calon angkasawan negara, Pegawai Perubatan Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM) Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor dan doktor gigi Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATM) Kapten Dr Faiz Khaleed bersama Ketua Pengarah Agensi Angkasa Negara (Angkasa) Datuk Dr Mazlan Othman turut hadir mengikuti penggulungan perbahasan di Dewan Rakyat.

.

THE FIRST MALAYSIAN COSMONAUT WILL ARRIVE IN RUSSIA AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER
Topic: - Training Updates

The first cosmonaut in the history of Malaysia and his back-up will arrive in Russia for training and instructions course in September 27, reported the National Space Agency.

"National Space trailblazer, Doctor Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Al Masrie and his back-up Doctor Faiz bin Khaleed will arrive in Russia for the final course of training and special instructions within the framework of the Russian-Malaysian program of astronaut training in September 27. All training will take place on the base of the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre", described the Malaysian National Space Agency.

A week before that, on September 20, the irector-General of the the Malaysian National Space Agency, Professor Mazlan binti Othman, will arrive in Moscow. She will be accompanied by six medical and aviation specialists from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations, added a spokesperson for the agency.

"The duration of the course of training for our cosmonaut is estimated to be a year. During this period, together with the Russian specialists, all components of the experiments, which Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor will conduct in orbit, will be finally determined. In particular, we plan to complete medical studies on the functions of the cardiovascular system, conduct experiments on neurophysiology, cellular and microbiology, and also to study the development of seeds of plants, which traditionally grow in Malaysia, in space," said the representative of the Malaysian National Space Agency.

The names of the first two Angkasawan candidates were declared last Monday by Prime Minister Abudllah Ahmad Badawi.

"Malaysian Gagarin's start" in space is planned in October 2007, aboard the Russian ship "TMA-11" together with members of prolonged expedition STS-16. The idea of sending a Malaysian citizen into space was first conceived in 2003 by then Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohammed. Initially the plan was to announce the candidature of the cosmonaut at the end 2004; however, this was postponed because of the shortage of specialists to conduct the biomedical examinations.

The national space agency of Malaysia, which announced the competition for the title of first national cosmonaut, in 2005 received 11, 275 applications from the citizens of the country. Of these, 4 were selected in March: Shukor, Khaleed, Pilot Mohammed Faiz Mohammed Kamaluddin and the only woman, Engineer Shiva Vanajah

Sending a Malaysian cosmonaut into space is one of the conditions of transaction for the purchase of Russian destroyers Su-30[MKM] with a cost $900 of millions by Malaysia.

DUA DOKTOR BAWA CABARAN NEGARA
Topic: - Abt the Final 2

MALAYSIA BOLEH BUT ITS PEOPLE NEED ATTITUDE CHANGE
Topic: - Other Reports

IF Russian astronauts are called cosmonauts and those from China are called taikonauts, what would Malaysian astronauts be called?

Answer: Can-or-not?

That was the joke that made the rounds last year when we announced plans to put the first Malaysian in space.

So much for 'Malaysia Boleh'.

It was, frankly, a typically Malaysian response.

We - who seem to be allergic to even the concept of achievement - can't help adopting a snide and defeatist posture when prodded to do a little more than we're accustomed to.

There's little excuse for that attitude now that we have a track record for accomplishing the extraordinary.

Transforming ourselves from an agricultural backwater into the 17th-largest trading nation in the world does, after all, take some spunk.

But the jokes are now officially over when it comes to the Malaysian astronaut programme.

This week, authorities announced the last two candidates in the race: medical officer Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, 34, and army dental surgeon Faiz Khaleed, 26.

Both men are scheduled to leave for the Yuri Gagarin Aerospace Training Centre in Moscow at the end of this month and will undergo 12 months of training before it is decided which of them will have the honour of taking the Malaysian flag to the International Space Station next year.

The announcement meant that the other two shortlisted candidates, senior quality engineer S Vanajah and commercial airline pilot Mohammed Faiz Kamaludin, are officially out of the running.

Ms Vanajah apparently didn't fare well during a gravity test, while it was discovered that Captain Mohammed Faiz had a medical ailment.

As the only woman in the select group, Ms Vanajah has been a standard-bearer for Malaysian women these last few months.

I wonder how many of us really believed that the first Malaysian astronaut would be a woman, but the dream was sweet while it lasted and we are all sorry to see Ms Vanajah go.

Meanwhile, the jokers may have retired from the gallery but the cynics have happily moved in to take their place.

Some predict that Dr Sheikh Muszaphar will ultimately be chosen because, while Capt (Dr) Faiz is attractive in his own right, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar looks like he just stepped off the cover of GQ magazine.

The handsome and always perfectly-coiffed doctor looks like he's photogenic enough to make even a bulky space suit look good.

And who doesn't want his pioneering astronaut to look dashing?

Of course, that trivialises the arduous process that both men - indeed all four of the shortlisted candidates - have gone through.

There were reportedly 10,000 people who applied for the programme and who knows what physical, mental and emotional trials were used to winnow them down to these two.

In any case, it will be another year before we hear the final chapter in this story.

We could certainly work on our collective attitude in the meantime, unless we want to stay clunkily earth-bound forever.

GOVERNMENT IN TALKS TO GET LIVE TELECAST OF SPACE JOURNEY
Topic: - Other Reports

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians will be able to watch its first astronaut rocket into space on Sept 2 next year once plans to show the historic event live on local television are finalised, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Jamaludin Jarjis said yesterday.

The ministry and the Russian authorities were in discussion to beam live the astronaut's journey aboard the Russian space launcher Soyuz 2 to the international space station, as part of a programme to celebrate Malaysia's 50th Merdeka Day celebration next year, he told reporters here.

Earlier, he opened a symposium on the Third National Symposium on Quality Management organised by the ministry, the Malaysian Institute of Nuclear Technology, the National Productivity Corporation and the Malaysian Radiation Protection Association.

On Monday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi named the two candidates selected to undergo a 12-month training stint at the Yuri Gagarin Aerospace Training Centre at Star City in Moscow at the end of the month.

They are Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, 34, a medical officer of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia hospital and Kapt Dr Faiz Khaleed, 26, a dental surgeon with the Malaysian Defence Forces.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar and Dr Faiz were among four aspirants who made the cut in the previous selection process that took them to Moscow for assessment.

The other two are Malaysia Airlines pilot Mohamed Faiz Kamaluddin, 34, and engineer S. Vanajah, 35, the sole woman candidate. All four underwent training at the Russian Space Agency in Moscow.

Jamaludin also said the ministry would set up a special interactive website to enable Malaysians to communicate with the astronauts under Malaysia’s first astronaut programme.

"We are in talks with the Education Ministry to allow students to communicate with the astronauts and conduct biological science experiments as well as to learn about science and technology," he said.

In announcing the candidates on Monday, the prime minister said the pair had not only beaten more than 10,000 candidates for the chance of a lifetime, but had also earned a place in the history of the country.

MALAYSIA NEGOTIATING LIVE BROADCAST OF ITS FIRST ASTRONAUT'S JOURNEY INTO SPACE: REPORT
Topic: - Other Reports

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is in talks with Russian officials over whether it can set up live broadcasts of the first Malaysian astronaut when he joins a Russian space expedition next year, a news report said Wednesday.

Malaysia's astronaut, to be decided between two finalists chosen in a national search, will journey aboard a Russian Soyuz 2 rocket to the international space station in September 2007 under an agreement between the two countries.

The government was discussing beaming the event live for viewers here as part of Malaysia's 50th year of independence celebrations, Science, Technology and Innovations Minister Jamaludin Jarjis was quoted as saying by The Star.

He added that the ministry also planned to set up an interactive Web page to enable Malaysians to communicate with the astronaut in the space capsule.

"We are in talks with the Education Ministry to allow students to communicate with the astronauts and conduct biological science experiments as well as to learn about science and technology," Jamaludin reportedly said.

The two finalists to become Malaysia's astronaut, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, 34, and Faiz Khaleed, 26, will return to Russia soon for nearly a year of preparations. But only one will have the chance to spend up to eight days in September 2007 aboard the ISS.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced Monday that either Sheikh Muszaphar or Faiz will take part the expedition, eliminating two other finalists who underwent medical and technical tests at Moscow's Russian Space Agency earlier this year. They were selected from more than 10,000 candidates.

Sheikh Muszaphar, a medical officer at the National University Hospital, was considered the first choice while defense forces dentist Faiz was the reserve option, the government has said.

Jamaludin was not reachable at his office Wednesday morning. A spokeswoman at his ministry declined to comment on the report, saying only the minister is authorized to speak to the media.

HUKM DOC SAYS SPACE EXPERIENCE COMES BEFORE MASTERS STUDIES
Topic: - Selection Process

Medical officer Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor (left) and army dental surgeon Capt Dr Faiz Khaleed, the two successful candidates for the Astronaut programme raring to go to Moscow to become the first Malaysian astronaut posing at the KL International Airport.
SEPANG: The pursuit of a Masters degree and modelling will now take a backseat for Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor.

The medical officer, however, hopes to carry out bone studies while in space if he gets the nod to become Malaysia's first astronaut.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar who is pursuing a Masters in Orthopaedics while serving as a trainee lecturer at Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, said although his first love was medicine, he believed in diversifying, and his ultimate dream was to go into space.

"I have put my heart and soul into this, everything else has to take a backseat until the whole programme is over," he said, when asked about his modelling and medical career.

The all-rounder has also taken part in humanitarian aid activities for Mercy Malaysia – in Afghanistan in 2002 and Cambodia in 2003.

His fellow astronaut candidate Kapt Dr Faiz Khaleed, a dental surgeon with the Malaysian Armed Forces, said he was looking forward to going to space.

"If I say I am not afraid, it will not be true, as no one is fearless, especially when he has to do something new. But we have to conquer fear," he said.

Malaysia Airlines pilot Mohammed Faiz Kamaludin and senior quality engineer S. Vanajah, who did not make the final cut, congratulated Dr Sheikh Muszaphar and Kapt Dr Faiz.

Mohammed Faiz, who was not selected due to a "minute medical complication," said he believed in destiny.

"I am looking at the bright side – I went to Moscow, met a lot of people, learnt the Russian language and now despite my own work as a pilot, I can still help promote science and space studies in schools under Angkasa's (National Space Agency) programme," he said.

Vanajah said she would go back to work as an events coordinator and be a backup candidate in Angkasa's programme.

DOCTORS MAKE FINAL CUT IN ASTRONAUT RACE
Topic: - Selection Process

SEPANG: Medical officer Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor and army dental surgeon Kapt Dr Faiz Khaleed are Malaysia's final two astronaut candidates.

Announcing this at the Bunga Raya Complex of the KL International Airport yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi urged them to make the nation proud and put Malaysia on the map.

He also congratulated every person and organisation involved in selecting the candidates to be the country's first astronaut from the more than 10,000 applicants.

Medical officer Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor (left) and army dental surgeon Kapt Dr Faiz Khaleed have been selected as Malaysia's final two astronaut candidates. After further training in Moscow one will be named Malaysia's first astronaut.
Dr Sheikh Muszaphar, 34, and Kapt Dr Faiz, 26, were shortlisted from four finalists.

The other two were senior quality engineer S. Vanajah and 34-year-old commercial airline pilot Capt Mohammed Faiz Kamaludin.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar, attached to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital, and Kapt Dr Faiz will undergo a 12-month training stint in Russia.

They will leave for the Yuri Gagarin Aerospace Training Centre at Star City in Moscow at end of the month.

The successful candidate is scheduled to leave for the International Space Station on Sept 2 next year to undergo a research and development programme, including research on cancer and biotechnology.

Selection committee chairman Tun Mohammed Hanif Omar told reporters that both Vanajah and Capt Mohammed Faiz lost out during their recent stint at the Russian Space Agency in Moscow.

"Vanajah suffered stress during a gravity test and Capt Mohammed Faiz was found to have a medical problem."

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis said that before the Moscow stint, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar and Capt Mohammed Faiz had the best marks but since the latter had a medical problem, Kapt Dr Faiz was chosen instead.

"But this still does not mean Dr Sheikh Muszaphar will be the astronaut as anything can happen," he said.

Dr Jamaluddin said the programme would also help make children realise the importance of space science.

"There are plans to have teleconferencing access to the Malaysian astronaut during his time in space," he said.
